"Echoes of Faith: The Legacy of the Cristeros and the Kingship of Christ"

 "¡Viva, Cristo Rey!" the rallying cry of the Cristeros during the Mexican Cristero War, which took place from 1926 to 1929 in Mexico. This conflict was a significant time period in Mexican history and involved a violent struggle between the government and Catholic rebels.

The Cristero War led to a series of reforms and changes in Mexico, including efforts to separate the Catholic Church from the state. The government at the time had implemented a series of anti-Catholic measures. These measures aimed to restrict the influence and activities of the Catholic Church in Mexico, including the closure of churches and the expulsion of foreign clergy.

In response to these measures, many Catholics, including peasants and other ordinary citizens, took up arms to defend their faith and religious freedom. They became known as Cristeros, and "¡Viva, Cristo Rey!" (Long Live Christ the King!) became their battle cry and expression of their defiance against the anti-Catholic policies of the government.

Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro was a Mexican Jesuit priest who played a significant role in supporting the Cristeros through his clandestine ministry. His final words were, "¡Viva Cristo Rey!" as he faced execution by firing squad have become a symbol of courage and faith for Catholics in Mexico and beyond.

The War ended in 1929 with a peace agreement that allowed for greater religious freedom in Mexico. However, the tensions between the state and the Catholic Church continued for many years, and it wasn't until the 1990s that the Mexican government formally recognized the Catholic Church's legal status.

The Cristero War remains an important chapter in Mexican history, highlighting the struggle for religious freedom and the enduring faith of those who were willing to sacrifice for their beliefs.

The message of "¡Viva, Cristo Rey!" and the courageous resistance of the Cristeros finds resonance in Sunday’s feast of The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. This feast, celebrated on the last Sunday of the liturgical year, emphasizes the kingship and sovereignty of Christ over all creation.

In the Gospel reading from Matthew, Jesus speaks of the final judgment when the Son of Man will come in glory and separate the righteous from the unrighteous based on their acts of mercy and love. The famous passage of the "sheep and the goats" reminds us that Christ is the ultimate judge, and the way we treat our fellow human beings reflects our response to His kingship. Asumiendo la Belleza de la Gratitud Cotidiana

 

En medio del ajetreo y el bullicio de nuestras vidas, es demasiado fácil pasar por alto la belleza simple pero profunda de la gratitud. A menudo, nos encontramos persiguiendo grandes logros, momentos más grandes que la vida y la próxima gran cosa, descuidando apreciar las bendiciones cotidianas que nos rodean.

Es en estos momentos ordinarios que podemos descubrir el extraordinario poder de la gratitud. Como los suaves rayos del sol de la mañana que acarician nuestras mejillas o el reconfortante aroma del café recién hecho que llena nuestros hogares, la vida está llena de pequeñas maravillas que, cuando se reconocen y abrazan, pueden elevar nuestros espíritus.

Mientras nos tomamos un momento para pausar y reflexionar sobre la belleza de la gratitud en nuestras propias vidas hoy, consideremos estos aspectos:

In the hustle and bustle of our lives, it's all too easy to overlook the simple yet profound beauty of gratitude. Often, we find ourselves chasing after grand achievements, larger-than-life moments, and the next big thing, neglecting to appreciate the everyday blessings that surround us.

It is in these ordinary moments that we can discover the extraordinary power of gratitude. Like the gentle rays of the morning sun that kiss our cheeks or the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee that fills our homes, life is brimming with small wonders that, when acknowledged and embraced, can elevate our spirits.

As we take a moment to pause and reflect on the beauty of gratitude in our own lives today, let us consider these aspects:

In our fast-paced world, we are often preoccupied with what's to come or what has passed. Yet, there's a unique magic in being fully present in the here and now. Talentos: Dones Confiados, No Guardados

 

En el Trigésimo Tercer Domingo del año,

Reflexionamos con humildad, sin desmayar,

La Parábola de los Talentos nos guía,

A entender cómo en la vida debemos actuar.

 

Dios nos otorga dones, talentos y más,

Nos confía sus tesoros para administrar,

Dos siervos fieles, con coraje audaz,

Multiplicaron bendiciones, sin dudar.

 

Pero uno, por miedo, su talento enterró,

Sin utilizarlo, ni crecerlo, lo dejó,

El amo reprendió su falta de acción,

En su temor, perdió bendición.

 

¿Qué haremos con los dones que recibimos?

¿Los multiplicaremos o en miedo los omitimos?

La reflexión nos llama a despertar,

A usar con sabiduría lo que Dios nos da.

 

Cada talento, un regalo divino,

Tiempo, talento, recursos en camino,

Para el bien común, nuestro propósito claro,

Avanzar el reino de Dios, ese es el amparo.

 

Al final del año litúrgico, recordamos,

Que nuestras acciones importan, afirmamos,

Inspíranos, Parábola de los Talentos,

A ser fieles administradores, contentos.

 

Que nuestras vidas reflejen la gratitud,

Por las bendiciones en nuestra actitud,

Que al usar nuestros dones con amor,

Hagamos fructificar lo que el Señor nos otorgó.

 

Amigos, el Trigésimo Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario marca el acercamiento al final del año litúrgico, cuando las lecturas nos invitan a contemplar la realidad última de nuestra existencia y la segunda venida de Cristo. La lectura del Evangelio de este domingo, Mateo 25:14-30, presenta la Parábola de los Talentos. Esta poderosa historia nos enseña sobre la responsabilidad y el cuidado de los dones y recursos que Dios nos ha confiado.

 

En la parábola, un amo entrega talentos (una forma de moneda en los tiempos bíblicos) a sus tres siervos. Dos de ellos invierten y duplican los talentos que recibieron, mientras que el tercer siervo entierra su talento por miedo y lo devuelve sin ningún aumento. El amo elogia a los dos primeros siervos por su fiel administración y les confía aún más responsabilidad, mientras reprende al tercer siervo por su miedo y falta de iniciativa.

 

Esta parábola nos desafía a reflexionar sobre cómo usamos los dones y talentos que Dios nos ha otorgado. Es un recordatorio de que Dios espera que utilicemos de manera activa y creativa nuestras bendiciones para el bien común y el avance del reino de Dios en la tierra. Ya sean nuestras bendiciones tiempo, talentos, recursos o oportunidades, estamos llamados a usarlos para el mayor bien y el avance del reino de Dios en la tierra.

 

A medida que nos acercamos al final del año litúrgico, permitámonos inspirarnos en la Parábola de los Talentos para ser administradores fieles y creativos de las bendiciones que hemos recibido, sabiendo que nuestras acciones tienen el potencial de dar frutos para la gloria de Dios y el bienestar de nuestros prójimos.

 

Preguntas para reflexionar:

 

1. ¿Qué talentos y recursos ha confiado Dios a mí, y cómo los estoy utilizando para beneficio de los demás y el reino de Dios?

 

2. ¿Estoy permitiendo que el miedo o la complacencia me detengan para no tomar riesgos y aprovechar al máximo las oportunidades que Dios me presenta en la vida?

Talents: Gifts Entrusted, Not Kept

In the waning light of Ordinary Time's embrace,

A parable unfolds, with truth we must face.

The talents we're given, a gift from above,

Are treasures to cherish, expressions of love.

 

In Matthew's Gospel, the message is clear,

Three servants entrusted, talents held dear.

Two boldly invested, their faith shining bright,

Multiplying their gifts with all of their might.

 

But one, filled with fear, buried deep in the ground,

His talent unspent, no abundance was found.

The master returned to assess what they'd done,

With joy for the faithful, but for one, there was none.

 

For the talents we're given, God's trust in our care,

Are meant to be shared, not hidden in despair.

With courage and purpose, let's use them to bless,

To relieve others' burdens, their sorrows, distress.

 

As we ponder these words on this Sunday so true,

May we open our hearts to the grace that's in view.

To invest in God's kingdom, His love to proclaim,

And multiply blessings in Jesus' name.

 

So, reflect on the talents entrusted to thee,

Are they used for God's glory, for all eyes to see?

For the challenge remains, as the readings unfold,

To invest in God's kingdom with hearts made of gold.

 

 

Friends, The Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time, marks the nearing end of the liturgical year, when the readings begin to invite us to contemplate the ultimate reality of our existence and the second coming of Christ. This Sunday’s Gospel reading, Matthew 25:14-30, presents the Parable of the Talents. This powerful story teaches us about the responsibility and stewardship of the gifts and resources that God has entrusted to us.

 

In the parable, a master gives talents (a form of currency in biblical times) to his three servants. Two of them invest and double the talents they received, while the third servant buries his talent out of fear and returns it without any increase. The master commends the first two servants for their faithful stewardship and entrusts them with even more responsibility, while he chastises the third servant for his fear and lack of initiative.

 

This parable challenges us to reflect on how we use the gifts and talents that God has bestowed upon us. It's a reminder that God expects us to actively and creatively invest and multiply the blessings we have received. Whether these blessings are our time, talents, resources, or opportunities, we are called to use them for the greater good and the advancement of God's kingdom on earth.

 

As we approach the end of the liturgical year, let us be inspired by the Parable of the Talents to be faithful and creative stewards of the blessings we have received, knowing that our actions have the potential to bear fruit for the glory of God and the well-being of our neighbors.

2.      Am I allowing fear or complacency to hold me back from taking risks and making the most of the opportunities God presents in my life?

Esté alerta, prepárese para Cristo

 

Las lecturas del fin de semana pasado nos invitaron a reflexionar sobre la importancia de estar vigilantes y preparados para la venida del Señor. En el Evangelio de Mateo (Mateo 25:1-13), Jesús cuenta la parábola de las diez damas de honor, cinco prudentes y cinco insensatas. Las damas de honor prudentes tenían suficiente aceite para sus lámparas, mientras que las insensatas no trajeron aceite extra. Cuando finalmente llegó el novio, las damas de honor sabias estaban listas para recibirlo, mientras que las insensatas quedaron en la oscuridad. Esta parábola sirve como recordatorio de la necesidad de preparación y vigilancia espiritual en nuestras vidas mientras esperamos la segunda venida de Cristo.

Como Católicos, estamos llamados a ser como las sabias damas de honor, manteniendo nuestra fe viva y ardiendo intensamente. Esto significa nutrir nuestra relación con Dios a través de la oración, las Escrituras y los sacramentos. También implica actos de caridad y amor hacia los demás, como se enfatiza en la primera lectura (Sabiduría 6,12-16), donde se describe la sabiduría como más valiosa que cualquier tesoro terrenal. Nuestra fe es un regalo y debemos nutrirla diariamente para estar preparados cuando el Señor venga a nuestro encuentro.

Be Vigilant, Prepare for Christ

 

The readings from last weekend invited us to reflect on the importance of being vigilant and prepared for the coming of the Lord. In the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 25:1-13), Jesus tells the parable of the ten bridesmaids, five wise and five foolish. The wise bridesmaids were prepared with enough oil for their lamps, while the foolish ones did not bring extra oil. When the bridegroom finally arrived, the wise bridesmaids were ready to greet him, while the foolish ones were left in darkness. This parable serves as a reminder of the need for spiritual readiness and vigilance in our lives as we await the second coming of Christ.

As Catholics, we are called to be like the wise bridesmaids, keeping our faith alive and burning brightly. This means nurturing our relationship with God through prayer, Scripture, and the sacraments. It also involves acts of charity and love towards others, as emphasized in the first reading (Wisdom 6:12-16), where wisdom is described as more valuable than any earthly treasure. Our faith is a gift, and we must nurture it daily to be ready when the Lord comes to meet us. As you go about this week, reflect on two things to help keep your faith alive and burning brightly by asking:

1. How can I deepen my relationship with God and keep the flame of faith burning brightly in my life? 

 

2. In what ways can I share the light of God's love and wisdom with others in my community?

Verdadero discipulado: desafío de la humildad

 

En las lecturas de este domingo encontramos el Evangelio de Mateo (Mateo 23:1-12), donde Jesús ofrece un mensaje profundo sobre la humildad y la autenticidad. Critica a los líderes religiosos de su tiempo por su piedad exterior y falta de verdadera humildad, advirtiendo contra la búsqueda de títulos y honores.

En cambio, Jesús nos llama a abrazar una fe humilde y sincera que se centre en servir a los demás en lugar de buscar reconocimiento. El Evangelio nos desafía a examinar nuestras propias vidas y motivaciones. ¿Estamos buscando la fe por las apariencias o profundizando genuinamente nuestra relación con Dios?

Nos invita a dejar de lado el deseo de estatus y, en cambio, abrazar una vida de servicio humilde y discipulado auténtico.

Mientras reflexionamos sobre este Evangelio, aquí hay tres preguntas para reflexionar y dos desafíos a considerar para la semana:

1. ¿Estamos simplemente siguiendo las rutinas de las prácticas religiosas o buscamos genuinamente acercarnos a Dios?

Primero, busque oportunidades para servir sin esperar elogios o reconocimiento. Ya sea ayudando a un vecino necesitado, siendo voluntario en una organización benéfica local o simplemente estando atentos a las necesidades de quienes nos rodean, podemos esforzarnos por vivir los valores de humildad y servicio que enseña Jesús.

En segundo lugar, comprométete al autoexamen, al arrepentimiento y a una dedicación renovada a vivir tu fe con genuina humildad y autenticidad. Si hay relaciones rotas que necesitan ser reparadas, llévelo a la oración para saber cómo repararlas.

True Discipleship: Humility Challenge

In this Sunday's readings we encounter the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 23:1-12), where Jesus offers a profound message about humility and authenticity. He criticizes the religious leaders of his time for their outward piety and lack of true humility, cautioning against seeking titles and honor. 
Instead, Jesus calls us to embrace humble and sincere faith that focuses on serving others rather than seeking recognition. The Gospel challenges us to examine our own lives and motivations. Are we pursuing faith for appearances or genuinely deepening our relationship with God? 

It invites us to let go of the desire for status and instead embrace a life of humble service and authentic discipleship.

As we reflect on this Gospel, here are three questions to reflect on and two challenges to consider for the week:

1. Are we merely going through the motions of religious practices, or are we genuinely seeking to draw closer to God? 
2. Are our prayers heartfelt, or do they lack depth and sincerity? 
3. Are we living out the principles of love, compassion, and justice that our faith teaches us?

Challenge for the week:

First, Seek opportunities to serve without expecting praise or acknowledgment. Whether it's helping a neighbor in need, volunteering at a local charity, or simply being attentive to the needs of those around us, we can strive to live out the values of humility and service that Jesus teaches. 

Second,  commit to self-examination, repentance, and a renewed dedication to living out your faith with genuine humility and authenticity. If there are broken relationships that need mending, take it to prayer in how to mend them.

Saint Charles: Being true to Faith and Humility

Dear Friends in Christ! 

Today, as we reflect on the memorial of Saint Charles Borromeo, we are reminded of the importance of humility and faithfulness in our Christian journey. The readings chosen for today, from the Letter to the Romans and the Gospel of Luke, provide us with valuable insights that connect with the life and example of Saint Charles Borromeo.

In the first reading from the Letter to the Romans (Rom 11:1-2a, 11-12, 25-29), St. Paul speaks about the faithfulness of God. Just as God remained faithful to the people of Israel, despite their unfaithfulness at times, we are reminded of the unending love and mercy of our Heavenly Father. Saint Charles Borromeo, whose life we commemorate today, exemplified this faithfulness in his dedication to the Church and the reform of the clergy during a challenging period in history. He tirelessly worked to renew the faith and practices of the Church, always relying on God's faithfulness.

The Gospel reading from Luke (Lk 14:1, 7-11) presents the teaching of Jesus on humility. He advises us not to seek places of honor but to take the lowest place so that we may be exalted by God. This teaching echoes the humility and servant leadership of Saint Charles Borromeo. He lived a life of humility, always putting the needs of the Church and its people above his own ambitions. His selfless dedication to the service of God and His people serves as an inspiration to us all.

As we reflect on these readings and the life of Saint Charles Borromeo, let us remember the importance of remaining faithful to God, even in the face of challenges and difficulties. Let us also strive to imitate the humility of Saint Charles, seeking not our own glory but the glory of God and the well-being of His Church.

May Saint Charles Borromeo intercede for us, that we may grow in faithfulness and humility in our Christian journey. Amen.

Bridging Cultural Traditions and Faith

Today we celebrate All Souls' Day, also known as the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. It holds a special place within the Catholic Church. It serves as a moment of solemn remembrance and prayer for the departed souls, particularly those in purgatory. This observance is deeply intertwined with the Church's doctrine of the Communion of Saints, encompassing the living, the souls in purgatory, and the heavenly saints.

In a harmonious twist, when I married my Wife Martha I discovered that there's an opportunity to unite cultural traditions and Catholic faith, exemplified by Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. Dia de los Muertos, deeply rooted in Mexican culture, centers on vibrant altars and joyous customs to celebrate and honor departed loved ones. This cultural celebration can seamlessly meld with Catholic beliefs while retaining their fundamental tenets.

I never put it together on how much meaning was behind this tradition until we lost our son Miguel. This tradition really gave me a sense of healing.  

Drawing inspiration from scripture, Wisdom 3:1-9 underscores the promise of eternal life for the righteous, providing solace in the knowledge that the faithful departed will bask in God's boundless love and mercy. 

In Romans 6:3-9, the transformative power of baptism is highlighted, emphasizing the unbreakable connection between believers and Christ, both in life and death. This connection offers hope to the souls in purgatory, as they journey towards full union with God.

Additionally, John 6:37-40 reinforces the notion of God's benevolent plan for salvation. On All Souls' Day, it serves as a poignant reminder that God desires the eternal life of all entrusted to Him, motivating us to fervently pray for the souls in purgatory, asking for God's mercy for their purification.

By integrating these reflections with elements of Dia de los Muertos, Catholics can authentically celebrate All Souls' Day. This might involve creating vibrant altars, presenting favorite foods of the departed, and offering heartfelt prayers for their souls, all while upholding the core Catholic belief in the hopeful prospect of eternal life and God's compassionate mercy for the faithful departed. This fusion of cultural and religious practices represents a beautiful and meaningful way to commemorate and honor the departed within the context of the Catholic faith.
