Journey Towards Perfect Holiness

On this Third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday, we are joyfully called to ponder the profound theme of our readings: the aspiration towards perfect holiness. Isaiah, in our first reading, speaks of a transformative promise from God. This is not merely a message of hope; it's a declaration of God’s intent to elevate us from our state of despair to a stature of divine dignity. We are not just uplifted from our woes; we are crowned with spiritual royalty.

In an unusual but poignant twist, our Responsorial Psalm is drawn from the Gospel of Luke – Mary's Magnificat. This beautiful hymn is a heartfelt expression of joy and gratitude, acknowledging God's mercy and greatness. Mary's words serve as a reminder of the joy that springs forth when we acknowledge God's work in our lives. In this week's Gospel it brings us to the figure of John the Baptist, the herald of Christ. John’s role, preparing the way for Jesus, is a reminder of our own call to prepare our hearts for the Lord. He is the embodiment of the perfect holiness we are all called to seek. Today's readings pose a vital question to each of us:

Are we content with mere 'goodness', or do we strive for the perfect holiness to which God calls us?

This isn't about being 'better' than others; it's about embracing the fullness of holiness that God offers. Isaiah makes it clear: God’s plan is to transform our lives from a state of brokenness to one of glorious holiness, a transformation made possible through our relationship with Jesus Christ. Yet, embracing this call is not without its challenges. It requires us to shed complacency, overcome sin, and fully commit our lives to God. St. Paul's exhortations to rejoice, pray, and be thankful are not just spiritual suggestions; they are essential actions that open our hearts to God's transformative grace. As we continue our journey through Advent, let us reflect:

  • In what aspects of our lives are we merely settling for 'good enough' instead of aspiring for the holiness God offers?

  • What prevents us from fully embracing this divine calling?

Here is a challeng for us all this week:

Identify one area in your life where spiritual mediocrity has taken hold. Commit to one concrete action that will steer you closer to the perfect holiness God desires for you. It might be deepening your prayer life, performing acts of kindness, or seeking reconciliation where there is discord.

Let us close in prayer:

Lord, guide us through this Advent season with hearts open to Your call. May we, like Mary, rejoice in Your goodness, and, like St. Paul, continuously seek Your presence in our lives. Help us to recognize and embrace the fullness of the holiness to which You call us.

Amen.

Have a great advent week! Please continue to pray for me as I will be praying for all of you!
